While Katelyn Beazley, Founder of Better Chance Rescue in Mesa, Arizona was at VEG, veterinary emergency group, with Chowder. He started to further decline while doing a quality of life assessment with the Veterinary staff.
Katelyn asked Vet staff to write a brief summary.
Rescue asked for text message update to be written: Good morning. Chowder this morning has declined dramatically from overnight. Chowder has developed abdominal effusion, pleural effusion and has severe hemorrhagic (bloody) diarrhea. We worry his body is shutting down. He is unable to maintain his blood glucose, blood pressure and temperature. At this time due to his decline we recommend humane euthanasia due to patient suffering.
We did humanely Euthanize Chowder today as his body was shut down and he started showing signs of further deterioration.
Please be patient as we grieve the Loss of Chowder.
Chowder had his Rally yesterday by eating his snacks and saying thank you for saving me. He was ready today, and it was time to let him go.
Over the past 72 hours we have received thousands towards his care. We have received enough for Chowders transition to a peaceful and pain free sleep.

Please be aware of delays at this time. We are a very tiny, but mighty rescue. While we appreciate all the condolences, please do not call us directly as we need some time to process what has happened to Poor Chowder
If you have seen our most recent case, Chowder you will know he was in critical condition with a Body Condition Score 1/9 and weighing only 8.2kg. His growth was stunted, he was covered in urine and feces. He was starved.
Chowder (Written by one of our former adopters, because I simply cannot put into words what are rescue is currently going through right now...
At time of adoption, the rescue does everything they can to vet their adopters, they ask all the right questions and charge an adoption fee, not some small amount either which is good.. But, people are and can be tremendously good liars. No one knows what exactly happened to Chowder in the care of his owners, and obviously they neglected him ALOT.
The rescue is not to blame for that or his condition, owners are.
Here is a brief summary of Chowder-
When Chowder was brought in and surrendered as a “stray” by his owners, authorities, vet staff, and others said that his case would basically not hold up in court because they couldn’t prove that his owners (the one who surrendered him as a stray) caused his condition because they seemed medical care. (We ARE exploring options and we are going to be a voice for Chowder, we just need time to grieve!)
The vet team at the first hospital called it in as they were supposed to and called the rescue after they realized the owners were the ones who dumped him to try and get Chowder some help. That is not to say the rescue isn’t trying everything they can do to get justice for Chowder, but that isn’t the priority right now, priority is to get Chowder better and healthy again and to help him pull through this.”
This is why we have been delayed in responding to all the comments and concerns.
